Maastricht Aachen Airport has today released its 2025 results. The figures, which show a 40% increase in air freight compared to 2024, have been welcomed by the Dutch airport – which at the end of 2024 announced it would be focusing on expanding air freight.
Planned investment in the airport to continue
The figures showed that the airport handled a remarkable 41,636 tonnes of cargo via 1,737 cargo flights in 2025 – a huge increase from the 28,448 tonnes of cargo it handled in 2024.
Speaking on the 2025 results, Dean Boljuncic, Head of Commercial Development, Maastricht Aachen Airport commented:
”The strong growth in cargo volume last year is down to MST’s continued investment in cargo handling facilities at the airport, particularly in the second half of 2025. We have invested in optimising our handling processes and improving our facilities in the past 12 months, including redeveloping MST’s AnimalPort and partnering with FlowerWatch to modernise perishable cargo operations”
Further demonstrating its dedication to becoming a regional cargo hub, the airport also appointed its first cargo sales executive in 2025.
Results show a decline in passenger numbers
While the 2025 figures show growth in cargo numbers, they also demonstrated a decline in passenger numbers, attributed to the departure of two airlines from the airport. However, Maastricht expects to see a return to 2024 passenger figures in 2026, with Hungarian airline Wizz Air set to expand operations.
Commenting on the decline in passenger numbers, Head of Commercial Development – Dean Boljuncic said:
”Both cargo and passengers are important for MST; however, we expect to see higher and faster returns from our cargo operations, and our strategic focus in this area is clearly paying off’.”
