Lufthansa Group is celebrating its 100th anniversary with a special livery on a Boeing 787-9, which is expected to arrive in Frankfurt in December.

100 Years of Lufthansa

Lufthansa began life nearly a century ago, when two German airlines merged to form Deutsche Luft Hansa. Since then, Lufthansa has grown into Europe’s second largest airline by number of passengers carried, as well as one of the five founding members of Star Alliance, the world’s first airline alliance, formed in 1997.

As well as its own airline, Lufthansa Group also owns several other European airlines, including Austrian Airlines, Air Dolomiti, ITA Airways, Eurowings and SunExpress. Lufthansa flies to more than 200 destinations and has joint ventures with ANA (All Nippon Airways) and Singapore Airlines.

A Livery to Celebrate the Occasion

Being one of the oldest airlines in operation, Lufthansa’s livery adorning the Boeing 787-9 aircraft is going into service in January 2026, a month after it is expected to arrive at Lufthansa’s hub in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. The aircraft, with registration number D-ABPU, features a unique livery intended to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Lufthansa’s founding and represent the Lufthansa brand in an iconic blue and white design.

The aircraft has a blue fuselage with white accents and the Lufthansa logo, with a crane whose wings tranform into plane wings, also in white. On the side of the aircraft, there is also light blue text reading ‘1926’ and ‘2026’, representing the year of Lufthansa’s founding and the anniversary 100 years later. This is also represented by the ‘100’ on the other side of the fuselage, with the Lufthansa crane merging into the numbers.

The special livery comes as part of an airline-wide overhaul by Lufthansa, which aims to both celebrate the airline’s legacy and modernise the experience of its passengers. From Spring 2026, Lufthansa is overhauling the onboard experience for many passengers, something that the airline has already invested more than 70 million euros (£61.7 million) into realising.
