After challenges at Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) led to multiple cancellations and delays earlier this year, United CEO Scott Kirby is celebrating the high performance of United at New Jersey’s Newark Airport this summer, with summer results on par with other New York airports such as JFK (John F. Kennedy International Airport) and LGA (LaGuardia Airport).

A Turnaround in Newark

The CEO of United, Scott Kirby, was in Newark on 16 September to discuss the East Coast hub’s bright future and celebrate how far it has come in terms of operational success. This summer, United celebrated its best ever summer at EWR, with United flights out of Newark arriving on time more often than even JFK and LGA, two major United hubs. More than six million people flew through Newark on United flights which arrived on time during this summer, which is a milestone in the airline’s history. Newark Airport had more than 20,000 international departures during the summer, with more than 8,200 flights bound for Europe, more than any other United hub in the same period.

Kirby celebrated United’s success at Newark in the following statement:

“Newark is operating better than ever and United’s future here is bright – that’s a credit to the thousands of Newark employees who deliver for our customers and one another every day. I want to also thank Secretary Duffy, FAA Administrator Bedford, Governor Murphy and all the national, state and local leaders who helped ensure that Newark remains a safe and reliable crown jewel for millions of domestic and international travellers. As the FAA and DOT implement their plan of increased staffing and improved technology, the reliability and on-time performance of Newark will only get better.”

Similarly, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy thanked the United CEO and the FAA for their roles in Newark’s high performance:

“Millions of passengers each year rely on Newark Airport for their travel needs. Over the past several months, we have worked diligently with our partners at the Port Authority and the FAA to move towards a return to full capacity at Newark Airport, and I am pleased with our progress. United’s continued investment in Newark Airport will serve as a significant economic driver for our region, creating thousands of new jobs for New Jersey communities. I thank United CEO Scott Kirby for his partnership in supporting our region’s world-class transportation infrastructure.”

In April and May, Newark suffered numerous delays and cancellations due to challenges resulting from issues with air traffic control staffing, technology outages and runway construction. However, the airline has worked to mitigate these as it returns to its high standards of day-to-day performance and customer satisfaction.

United Invests in Newark

During the autumn and winter, United plans to serve more than 160 domestic and international destinations from Newark, more than any other airline in the New York City area. It will add flights to popular destinations like Rome, Venice, Porto, Marrakesh and Dublin. For domestic flights, the airline will add flights to the existing destinations of Orlando and Fort Lauderdale, while also serving new cities such as Palm Springs in California, Columbia in South Carolina, and Chattanooga in Tennessee.

United also expects to hire more than 2,500 employees between 2025 and 2026 at Newark and will be the first airline at Newark to purchase sustainable aviation fuel for use on its services.
