Primera Air cancels transatlantic flights following Airbus delays

Following a delay in production of its A321NEOs, Primera Air, a Denmark-based low-cost international airline, has been forced to cancel yet another transatlantic flight.

Primera put out a statement following its cancellation: “Primera Air has confirmed that it plans to reinstate transatlantic services next year once the aircraft is available.”

Primera’s CEO expressed his disappointment of the cancellation noting, “Plans for the transatlantic routes have been in the making for over a year, and both Primera Air and Birmingham Airport have put a lot of effort into promoting the new routes which were welcomed by the region.”

This canceled service from Birmingham to New York will only be in effect for this summer, and the service is scheduled to resume once the orders on the new A321NEOs from Airbus get fulfilled. This cancellation is the second of the year for Primera; Primera had to cancel its Toronto transatlantic flights earlier this year for similar issues with its A321 delivery schedule.

While Primera has obtained one A321NEO, one frame is not adequate for sustaining on-time transatlantic flights and successfully mitigating IROP effects. Rather than attempt to run a scheduled transatlantic service with one plane, Primera has chosen to suspend service to the Americas until next year. During this time, they will still fly their short-haul routes from Birmingham.
