Turkish Airlines’ bid for Air Europa

The airline had been exploring a proposition for a stake in the Spanish operator for a while now. In June this year, Turkish Airlines had said that a potential investment was being considered. Earlier this month, it provided an update to its investors stating that it will be making an offer for a minority stake investment in Air Europa in a bid to facilitate its growth in the global aviation industry, given Air Europa’s presence in Latin America and the Iberian Peninsula, across both cargo and passenger segments.

The offer was accepted by Air Europa. Turkish Airlines, in an investor update on August 19, said:

“As stated in our Public Disclosure dated August 7, 2025, our Board of Directors had resolved to submit a binding offer for the acquisition of a minority stake in Air Europa Holding S.L.U. (“Air Europa”) with the objectives of strengthening our strategic position in the global aviation industry and increasing the number of tourists visiting Türkiye, along with the related economic contribution by opening new tourism markets in Latin America and expanding passenger and cargo flight network between Spain and Türkiye.”

The two parties will now be moving on to the transaction documentation process to close the investment. The 300 million euros invested will be utilised towards capital increase for the Spanish operator. Turkish Airlines expects the process to be completed within six to 12 months, subject to regulatory approvals. The exact percentage of the stake acquired will be determined later.

The Air Europa investment saga

There have been multiple bids for Air Europa over the past couple of years. Deutsche Lufthansa AG and Air France-KLM had pursued a potential investment in the airline but had terminated the process. IAG SA had also been trying to acquire the Spanish carrier, attempting to purchase the airline twice. The airline group had dropped its plans to acquire Air Europa after pushback from the European Union. It still holds a minority stake of 20% in the carrier.
