Emirates shares the new rules implemented keeping passenger safety as a top priority. Emirates customers will continue to be allowed to carry a power bank on board under specific conditions, but are strictly prohibited from using a power bank while in the aircraft cabin. This means charging devices from the power bank or using the aircraft’s power source to charge the power bank itself is forbidden.
What are the new regulations, and why are they being enforced?
Emirates shares the new safety rules for power banks, which are:
- Power banks carried must be under 100 watt-hours, which is approximately 27,027 milliamp-hours.
- No personal devices can be charged on board Emirates aircraft using the power bank.
- Capacity information must be available for inspection when carrying a power bank on board.
- Power banks must be securely placed in the seat pocket or in a bag underneath the seat in front; it is not permitted to be in the overhead stowage.
- Power banks are not allowed in checked luggage.
Emirates has enforced this new safety rule after an extensive review of the airline’s battery-related incidents. Emirates shares its steps to mitigate risks associated with power banks. The surge in power bank usage among general public has caused the review of lithium battery incidents on board flights in the aviation industry.
Most power banks have lithium-ion or lithium-polymer batteries, which, when damaged or overheated, can dissipate heat. The uncontrolled temperature rise can lead to fire, explosions and the release of toxic gases. By implementing a ban on usage in the aircraft cabin, Emirates is keeping customer and crew safety as a priority.
Keeping power banks in accessible locations in the cabin, crew on board can quickly respond to emergency in case of a fire.
