Cooperating with Visa, Lufthansa Group recently announced a new “Click to Pay” feature on its airline booking portals, including Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian Airlines, and Brussels Airlines. The system will be available from October 2025.

About the new function

The brand new “Click to Pay” feature will allow customers to make a booking by entering their email address, and does not require debit or credit details.

To use the “Click to Pay” function on the booking portal, customers will only need to register their payment details on payment network websites such as Visa or at card-issuing banks. Then customers can make a booking with the Lufthansa Group Airlines or on other online platforms via email recognition. The order will then be sent through, however, the process might still involve an authorisation via the customer’s bank, such as confirmation in their banking app.

Is the “Click to Pay” method secure?

The Lufthansa Group claims that the “Click to Pay” feature is enhancing security as there will be no card numbers processed, only digital placeholders.

Unlike actual card details, the tokens will be worthless if they fall into the wrong hands, and the Group claims that the risk of fraud with the new function will be 80% lower than entering card details manually without tokens.

Lufthansa Group Chief Commercial Officer Dieter Vranckx said:

“Our partnership with Visa is the next important step in fulfilling this ambition. Today, our guests can already plan and book all aspects of a flight more independently, easily and quickly than ever before. ‘Click to Pay’ is a great additional offer that further optimises the travel experience with our airlines when purchasing a flight ticket.”

Visa’s Head of Central Europe, Albrecht Kiel echoed this statement, saying:

“We are delighted to be able to support the Lufthansa Group with the introduction of ‘Click to Pay’. For customers of Europe’s leading airline group, completing a purchase will be as easy as contactless payment. ‘Click to Pay’ makes online card payments faster and more secure than ever before.”
