Vietnam Airlines will send out a Request for Proposals (RFP) at the start of 2025 for 50 jets. The airline signed a provisional deal in 2023 for Boeing’s 737 MAX jets, although other manufacturers are also in the running.

The Request for Proposals

The Request for Proposals has attracted attention from aircraft manufacturers as Vietnam Airlines becomes one of the fastest-growing airlines in Southeast Asia. The airline plans to use the new 50 narrow-body jets to modernise its fleet on its domestic and regional networks. The increased demand and the airline’s new growth plans have resulted in a large order.

Vietnam Airlines CEO Le Hong Ha commented:

“Boeing is one option; they have a very good offer for us.”

However, he also said that the door is still open for everyone.

The main contenders

Boeing appears to be in the lead for the RFP due to its strong relationship with Vietnam Airlines. The airline made a provisional deal for Boeing’s 737 MAX jets in 2023, with a good offer from the manufacturer.

However other manufacturers are still in the running. Airbus has many orders from other airlines in the region, and its A320neo family proves strong competition for Boeing’s 737 MAX jets.

Despite its entry into the region, Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China, Ltd (COMAC) is still awaiting its first significant order, possibly from Vietnam Airlines.

Vietnam Airlines plans to increase its fleet with 170 new aircraft by 2035 to accommodate the growing demand. This is a large increase from its current fleet of slightly over 90 jets. Its current fleet consists primarily of Airbus narrow-body aircraft, comprising A321s and A320neos.

COMAC, a Chinese manufacturer, has also set its sights on Vietnam Airlines. The manufacturer has recently entered production for commercial jets and has seen rapid growth. Its new COMAC C919 has seen numerous orders from Chinese airlines, such as Air China, China Southern, and China Eastern.

Who do you think will win this major order from Vietnam Airlines?
