Romania’s Supreme Council of National Defence (CSAT) has warned that an ongoing legal dispute involving the Romanian Air Traffic Services Administration (ROMATSA) could threaten the continuity of the country’s air navigation services.

Authorities warn of wider aviation impact

The warning follows a February 2026 ruling by the Bucharest Court of Appeal that suspended ROMATSA’s certificate as Romania’s sole air navigation service provider for 30 days. The case was brought by 12 air traffic controllers alleging discrimination in the company’s recruitment practices.

According to Romania‘s Presidency, the court decision is neither final nor enforceable, meaning ROMATSA will continue operating while legal proceedings continue.

However, CSAT said any interruption to the organisation’s services could affect European air traffic by forcing the rerouting of key air corridors. The council also warned that disruptions could impact commercial, cargo and emergency flights, as well as Romania’s role within EUROCONTROL and NATO operations.

Government asked to safeguard air navigation services

CSAT has instructed the Romanian government and relevant authorities to identify measures to ensure the continued provision of air navigation services and to maintain the security of Romania’s airspace throughout the legal process.

ROMATSA is responsible for providing air traffic control services across Romanian airspace, making it a key part of both the country’s aviation infrastructure and the wider European air traffic network.

What measures do you think governments should take to ensure air traffic services remain uninterrupted during legal disputes? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
