On March 22, the jointly established ACT FOR SKY organisation announced its goal to raise awareness of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and decarbonise aviation in Japan.

Joint Effort

The joint effort brings together four founding companies, voluntarily working toward the common goal of commercialising, promoting, and expanding the production of SAF domestically. The four founding companies are JGC Holdings Corporation, REVO International, All Nippon Airways Co., Ltd., and Japan Airlines Co., Ltd. These companies will also coordinate the activity of additional member companies within ACT FOR SKY.

ACT FOR SKY will also work to take action on its common goal by raising awareness in the general public about the importance of using SAF. This includes education about achieving a circular economy, as well as carbon neutrality.

To date, involved companies include:

  • JGC
  • REVO International
  • ANA
  • IHI
  • idemitsu
  • ITOCHU
  • ENOS
  • Odakyu
  • Cosmo
  • Taiyo Oil
  • Toto Engineering
  • Nissin Group
  • Marubeni
  • Mitsui & Co.
  • Mitsubishi Heavy Industries
  • Japan Airlines

These companies will work together to produce, secure, and promote SAF.

SAF in Japan

As the demand for SAF grows globally, Japan is looking to secure domestically produced SAF for commercial use. The aim of ACT FOR SKY is to establish a full supply chain in Japan –  from procurement of the materials needed to produce SAF to creating the supply.

SAF is already increasingly widespread in Europe and the U.S., however awareness is lacking in Japan. The organisation hopes to increase awareness in the country.

Sustainable Aviation Fuel, or SAF, is created using renewable sources, such as animal oils, cooking oils, biomass, and more.
