Pune Airport will have to close its operations from the 16th to the 29th of October 2021 to carry out essential resurfacing works on its runway. The news was confirmed by the Airport’s Director, Santosh Dhoke who said, “Flight operations will remain completely closed from tomorrow till October 29 and it will resume from October 30.” Furthermore, even when the airport reopens on the 29th of October, it will be closed for 12 hours a day, whilst the Airfield Ground Lighting System gets installed on the runway. Consequently, this means Pune Airport will not be able to resume 100% of its operations until the 1st of December 2021.

All of the repair works were ordered by the Indian Air Force, who manage the runway operations at Pune Airport. They cited the fact that the runway had continually deteriorated, to the extent that an immediate remedy was required.

Potential Disturbances During Festive Season

Pune Airport is unlikely to be able to benefit as greatly as other mainstream Indian airports from the boom in domestic travel during the Indian festivals of Dussehra and Diwali that take place during the months of October and November. The sudden closure has caused much dismay amongst domestic passengers with Sudeep Barve, a passenger, stating, “These hassles show that Pune needs an independent airport. It has been almost ten days that I am trying to get a basic answer from the travel portal on my refund.”

The Indian Air Force did however confirm that when it came to the Covid-19 vaccine supplies between Pune and Mumbai, that the runway operations will be enabled for this purpose during the period of repair works.
