A FedEx Boeing 767 was operating a cargo flight from Newark to Los Angeles. When the aircraft was beginning its approach, the pilots discovered that there was a problem with the 767’s left landing gear.

After circling Los Angeles airport for 70 minutes, the aircraft’s left engine hit the runway when landing, thereby creating a trail of sparks. The Los Angeles Fire Departement says that it responded to the Airport’s call around 3.50 a.m.

FAA: landing gear not extended

According to an Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) spokesperson, the left part of the 767’s landing gear could not be extended by the flight crew when touching down at Los Angeles Airport.

The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the matter.

FedEx pilot injured

FedEx states that one of the pilots on board sustained a non-life-threatening leg injury and is being treated. Company officials are working with investigators to fully understand what went wrong.

The runway, one of four at the airport, was closed pending removal of the aircraft, but airport officials did not expect delays due to the incident.
