Santa Barbara is introducing artificial intelligence-powered travel planning to help visitors create personalised itineraries and discover local experiences through a partnership with travel technology company Mindtrip.

AI Tools Brings Personalized Itineraries

Visit Santa Barbara, the region’s official destination marketing organisation, announced on Nov. 3 that it has partnered with Mindtrip to integrate an AI-powered planning tool into its website. The platform allows prospective visitors to ask questions, explore recommendations and build itineraries based on their interests.

The new integration transforms information on the destination’s tourism website into a conversational planning experience, instead of relying solely on traditional travel guides and search results.

Travellers can explore experiences ranging from Santa Barbara’s coastline and ARTS District to its Urban Wine Trail. The platform also addresses practical questions that can influence travel decisions, including how to get around without a car, what to wear for whale-watching excursions and where to find dog-friendly activities.

Kathy Janega-Dykes, President and CEO of Visit Santa Barbara, said the partnership reflects changing traveller expectations.

“Travel planning is becoming increasingly personalized,” Janega-Dykes said, adding that the organisation wants to meet travellers wherever they discover their next destination.

The tool draws on Visit Santa Barbara’s destination information and local knowledge to generate suggested itineraries and introduce visitors to businesses and experiences they might otherwise overlook.

A Shift in Destination Marketing

The development reflects a wider shift in how destinations and travel companies approach customer engagement. AI-powered tools are increasingly being introduced to simplify trip research. However, the usefulness depends on the accuracy and quality of the information behind their recommendation.

“AI is changing how travellers find information, but the quality of destination knowledge behind it matters,” said Andy Moss, co-founder and CEO of Mindtrip.

The partnership gives Visit Santa Barbara insight into what potential travellers are looking for, helping the organisation connect travellers with relevant local businesses as well as with existing tourism promotions.

As AI becomes a common part of travel planning, Santa Barbara’s new partnership offers an example of how destination organizations are adapting their digital services to changing visitor expectations.
