Japan Airlines (JAL) has selected the Embraer E190-E2 for its regional fleet renewal programme, with deliveries scheduled to start in fiscal year 2029.
The order includes 16 aircraft, with options for an additional 10. The decision to select the Embraer E190-E2 follows a detailed evaluation process.
E190-E2 selected for regional fleet renewal
JAL’s decision comes months after fellow Japanese carrier All Nippon Airways (ANA), which ordered the E190-E2 for its domestic operations in February 2025. ANA placed a firm order for 15 aircraft, with options for five more, and plans to introduce them from fiscal year 2028, one year before JAL’s scheduled deliveries.
Before the announcement, Bloomberg reported, citing people familiar with the matter, that the E190-E2 emerged as the leading candidate ahead of the Airbus A220 family.
The aircraft will eventually replace the Embraer E170 and E190 fleet operated by J-Air, JAL’s regional subsidiary.

Why JAL chose the E190-E2
The airline’s decision reflects changes across Japan’s domestic aviation market.
Airlines have faced shifting travel patterns, softer business demand, and rising operating costs in recent years.
At the same time, inflation and currency pressures have increased costs throughout the sector. In response, the JAL Group has continued implementing reforms outlined in its long-term growth strategy, known as the “JAL Group Management Vision 2035”.
JAL says the E190-E2 is positioned at the core of those plans for J-AIR, offering greater efficiency.

A Little about the Embraer E190-E2.
The Embraer E190-E2 is the largest aircraft in the Embraer E-jet E2 family. It features generation Pratt & Whitney PW1900G geared turbofan engines and an updated wing design aimed at improving performance and fuel efficiency.
According to JAL, the E190-E2 offers lower fuel consumption and reduced carbon dioxide emissions than earlier-generation aircraft. It also produces less noise, helping minimise the aircraft’s impact on communities surrounding airports.
JAL says the reduced noise level provides passengers with a comfortable travel experience.
With deliveries scheduled to start in fiscal year 2029, JAL selects Embraer E190-E2 aircraft to support its long-term regional network strategy.
