On 6th May 2025, Astana, VietJet Airlines, and Qazaq Air partnered for a new airline launch, Vietjet Qazaqstan to deepen bilateral ties between Vietnam and Kazakhstan. This was witnessed at a round table conference in the presence of Vietnamese General Secretary To Lam as a part of his state visit to the Republic of Kazakhstan.

A launch in Central Asia
This launch will open doors to meeting higher requirements for additional travel routes in Central Asia. It will also cater to thousands of local citizens, boosting the state’s economy by creating work opportunities.
In a statement, VietJet Air said:
“The airline will meet the growing travel demand in Kazakhstan while boosting cross-border tourism, trade, and logistics throughout Asia.”
The current Qazaq Air platform will host the new airlines, operated jointly by both parties.
The partnership was initiated by a transaction between Central Asia Aviation Holdings Limited, a subsidiary of the Vietnamese conglomerate Sovico Group JSC, and Kazasia Holdings Limited. The former holds a 51% stake in Qazaq Air.
In a press release, Qazaq Air said:
“The primary goal of this transaction is to advance the domestic civil aviation market by increasing competition, expanding international flight routes to and from Kazakhstan, creating new job positions, and many other related goals.”

The new airline’s order
VietJet Air will provide 20 Boeing 737s to Vietjet Qazaqstan, who have signed a Customer Service General Terms Agreement to assist further fleet expansion.
But why is Vietjet suddenly providing Qazaq Air, Boeing 737 MAX from an ‘All-airbus fleet’?
Vietjet had initially made an agreement of 100 Boeing 737 MAX in 2016 and then an additional 100 on 27th February 2019 at the US-North Korea Summit in Hanoi. This took place in the presence of United States President Donald Trump and Vietnamese Communist Party General Secretary and President Nguyen Phu Trong. The order will be delivered starting in late 2025.
This strategic shift from an ‘All-airbus fleet’ to Boeing was made to diversify and modernise their current fleet of 115. They are building a global flight network already kickstarting the year with new route expansion deals with China, Japan, India, Singapore, and Thailand.

Rebranding to Vietjet Qazaq Air
The replacement of Qazaq Air brand with the new Vietjet Qazaqstan is yet to be announced. However, the purpose states that it will allow Kazakhstan to be a part of the global expansion strategy of Vietnam. Besides it will also elevate their digital systems due to Boeing’s current technology upgrades.
In a statement, Vietjet Air said:
“The partnership also covers aircraft modifications and upgrades to ensure efficient and safe operations. Vietjet will bring deep expertise in modern airline operations, cutting-edge technology, and a global partner network.”
This partnership constitutes not just two countries building a strong and safe aviation link on the map, but mapping down job prospects for more individuals. Vietjet is launching more routes in Central Asia as a part of its strategy.
