United Airlines has announced plans to expand long-haul airline routes for its new Elevated Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner. The San Francisco-Sydney route is expanding its premium-focused Boeing 787-9 network with a planned Elevated configuration, scheduled to begin in December 2026.

United adds Elevated Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner to Sydney

San Francisco hosts Elevated flights to London Heathrow (LHR), Seoul Incheon (ICN), Singapore (SIN), and Zurich (ZRH). The San Francisco hub provides connections across the United States, where United launched flights from San Francisco earlier this year, and appears to continue to direct their focus on San Francisco as a travel hub. Sydney will be a huge part of this expansion.

United Airlines’ 787-9s will begin flying from San Francisco International Airport (SFO) to Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport (SYD) in December. The timing of the launch meets seasonal demands of the Northern Hemisphere’s winter months and the Southern Hemisphere’s summer months.

Elevated 787-9s are due to operate the route three times a week from Dec. 2, then daily from Dec. 17 through the winter period.

What will the Elevated Dreamliner look like?

United’s Elevated Boeing 787-9 uses a very different cabin design compared to the carrier’s standard 787-9.

The interior can hold 222 passengers, with 35 premium-economy recliners, 123 economy seats and 39 extra-legroom positions. This equates to 99 premium seats and a total of 222 seats, compared to the standard 64 seats.

The cabin will feature Polaris Studio seats, which are designed to enhance privacy and provide more space for passengers. United’s upgrades also include seat-back entertainment, connectivity and other additional cabin features. The Elevated product has more space, more allocated premium cabins, and larger suites.

Sydney will become another destination served by the Elevated 787-9 as the carrier expands the Dreamliner across major international routes.

What do you think of the layout of the new Elevated Dreamliners? Would you want to fly in one of these newly designed planes?
