The UK government has pledged to improve safeguards for disabled passengers. The improvements will include better protection from wheelchair damage when flying and better support from trained airport and airline staff.

Changes the government is promising

The changes followed an investigation into aviation accessibility led by former Paralympian Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson.

In 2023, over 1,000 wheelchairs were damaged in transit. That’s equivalent to more than 80 a month. To tackle this issue, a standardised form was introduced earlier this year, allowing passengers to share wheelchair battery and handling information before travel, cutting the risk of devices being damaged.

Staff training has also improved to help them recognise different needs and provide the right support without people having to repeatedly explain their disability.

A new digital platform is also set to be trialled. The platform will allow disabled passengers to provide their support needs before they travel, giving airport staff advance notice and time to prepare.

Transport secretary, Heidi Alexander, said:

“People must be able to fly with dignity and peace of mind – for disabled passengers this means not worrying about their wheelchair coming back in one piece, or whether staff will be there to support them around the airport.”

The government hopes the changes will address the challenges disabled air travellers face throughout their journeys by helping them access clear information, get appropriate assistance from trained airport staff, and have peace of mind that their wheelchairs are handled with proper care.

Improvements that have already happened

The aviation industry has already been taking steps to improve accessibility for disabled passengers.

For example, London Gatwick Airport produced a new disability training video last year that shows all staff the lived experiences of disabled passengers and ensures a consistent, respectful approach to accessibility across the airport.

London Luton Airport has also introduced detailed accessibility maps and independent journey materials to help ensure a simple and inclusive experience for assisted travel passengers.
