On December 19, 2024, passengers aboard Norwegian Air Shuttle flight DY-430 experienced a turbulent landing during their journey from Oslo to Molde, Norway. The Boeing 737-800, carrying 165 passengers and six crew members was authorized to approach runway 25. During the landing phase, the aircraft overrun the runway by approximately 150 meters and stopped abruptly by just 15 meters from the icy waters of the Norwegian Sea.  However, while all travellers and crew were safely evacuated using emergency slides, the evacuation challenges highlighted safety gaps and several passengers appeared visibly distressed.

Evacuation challenges highlighted safety gaps

Miraculously, everyone aboard safely evacuated using emergency slides, and they reported no injuries. It is also worth mentioning that some passengers attempted to evacuate with their luggage. There was advice against doing so, though. Later, the flight continued smoothly, ascending to flight level FL320 for its northwesterly regional journey to Molde. Both the descent and initial approach were executed without issues, and the aircraft received clearance to land on runway 25. The aircraft operating flight DY430 from Oslo was a Boeing 737-800, identified by registration LN-NIP. This 11.2-year-old narrowbody jet is part of Norwegian Air Shuttle’s fleet.

Turbulent landing: Safety protocol compliance

As reported by the airline, the primary cause of the incident was a combination of strong winds and a slippery runway. Additionally, a passenger’s account suggested that the aircraft touched down late and skidded off the runway, nearly leading to a fatal plunge into the sea. These conditions are not uncommon in Norway, raising questions about the preparedness of airlines and crews for such scenarios. Norway’s Accident Investigation Board (AIBN) has opened an investigation into the incident, which will possibly uncover insights into both the specific causes and broader safety practices. In total, local media reported that there were no injuries from the incident. However, several passengers appeared visibly distressed. Given these circumstances, it becomes crucial to examine how airlines manage such risks linked to extreme weather conditions.
