Over the last few years, one travel trend has taken off faster than a red-eye to Rome: flying carry-on only. Travellers, particularly the younger generations, are choosing lean, minimalist packing over typical checked bags due to viral TikTok tutorials and airport security tips. However, why is this trend increasing, and is it as useful as social media suggests?

Checked luggage, formerly considered an inconvenience, is now regarded by many as a luxury or even an unnecessary cost. Low-cost airlines such as Ryanair and Wizz Air pioneered à la carte tickets, charging passengers for any additional services, including checked luggage and, in some circumstances, overhead storage. Many travellers have now decided to adjust because baggage fees can easily mount up. They’re learning to minimise their carry-on limit rather than paying more, sometimes cramming weeklong excursions into a small roller bag or backpack.

Furthermore, money isn’t the only consideration. Flying carry-on only allows travellers to:

  • Skip baggage drop queues
  • Avoid the risk of lost luggage
  • Get out of the airport faster
  • Travel lighter and more intentionally

If you search for “carry-on packing hacks” on Instagram or TikTok, you’ll find an abundance of information, ranging from secret compression cubes and multipurpose clothing advice to arguments about rolling vs folding. Online travellers and influencers frequently advocate for the minimalist lifestyle by showing how to put ten days’ worth of clothes into a small personal item. More than just practicalities, the style today embodies a carefully manicured travel persona that is clever and clutter-free.

Social media creators like @herpackinglist and Ryan Trahan Flying Across America With Just A Penny show their audience that travelling with less not only saves money but offers a sense of freedom.

The Sustainability Perspective

Travelling light is also appealing to the environmentally responsible. Less weight means less gasoline consumed, and more deliberate packing frequently results in fewer impulsive purchases and throwaway items.

Sustainable travellers are increasingly embracing the “one bag” approach, which is consistent with the wider trend of conscientious buying and carbon-sensitive travel.

The Downsides of Going Carry-On Only

Of course, travelling carry-on only isn’t without its challenges:

  • Liquid restrictions still apply, making beauty and hygiene products tricky
  • Weather variation can make light packing difficult
  • You need to be more organised and plan ahead

And let’s not forget that in some cases, especially for long-haul or special occasions a larger suitcase may still be the better option.

There are no indications that the carry-on-only trend will slow down. More travellers are accepting the challenge of packing light, whether it’s due to cost, convenience, or content creators. This trend embodies the ideals of contemporary travel: adaptability, effectiveness, and a dash of flair along the route.

So the next time you’re reaching for your 23kg suitcase, ask yourself: do I really need all of this?
