Ethiopia is involved in a new aviation project that will see Africa experience significant growth in the aviation sector. The development comes as part of a new aviation project called the Bishoftu International Airport project. It is a large-scale plan seeking to develop a new airport in the city of Bishoftu. The project management is led by Ethiopian Airlines (EAL) and is set to become one of Africa’s most crucial aviation hubs.

The photo depicts a Boeing 787-8 plane painted white with green, yellow and red accents on its tail. The side of the plane shows large lettering spelling out 'Ethiopian' in a fiery red. The sky appears a little murky with blue tones peeking through.

Bishoftu International Airport project involvement

The U.S. is seeking to participate in the new large-scale plan by securing construction contracts for American companies. The state of Washington is actively holding talks about bringing in U.S. firms and technology with Ethiopian Airlines.

In conjunction with this, China is currently involved with the construction on many major Ethiopian infrastructure projects. These projects include the building of transportation networks such as roads and railways.

One of China and Ethiopia’s firms former joint ventures has been the development of Addis Ababa Djibouti Railway, a 750-kilometer railway that connects two major capitals in Africa.

This makes them a strong competitor against the U.S., with China having previously established links to some of Ethiopia’s most advanced architecture.

Washington is trying to secure the U.S.’s place in Africa’s aviation industry.

Mark Mitchell, U.S. deputy assistant secretary of commerce for the Middle East and Africa commented that the state of Washington was, in regards to the Bishoftu project:

“closely engaged in pushing to secure U.S. participation”

Mitchell also stated that the U.S. is interested in possibly offering:

“more Boeing aircraft powered by GE Aerospace engines.”

Six Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner’s were added to Ethiopia’s order from the U.S. made in Jan. 20, 2026, which already contained 20 jets.

Construction and development

The construction of Bishoftu International Airport has already begun. It commenced in January of this year and is scheduled to be completed by 2030. It is estimated to fit 110 million passengers annually, meaning it will be one of the world’s largest hubs.

There is opportunity for Africa’s advancements in the aviation industry to result in increased tourism and economical growth.
