Thailand remains one of the world’s top travel destinations, with 32.9 million international arrivals in 2025, according to Forbes, highlighting its strong global appeal and reliance on tourism. This sustained influx continues to play a crucial role in driving the country’s economic growth and supporting millions of local jobs, at a time when the country faces growing pressure in 2026 to balance record tourism demand with environmental sustainability and infrastructure capacity

Central Role of Tourism in Sustaining Thailand’s Aviation

Tourism plays a central role in sustaining Thailand’s aviation industry, serving as its primary driver of demand and growth. According to Bloomberg, tourism contributes around 20% of Thailand’s GDP when indirect effects are included.

Thailand’s airports handle approximately 124 million passengers annually, with volumes rebounding sharply after borders reopened in 2022. This was largely driven by international tourist flows, according to Statistia.

Global Aviation Rebounds as Thailand Outpaces Growth

Across Southeast Asia, aviation is set to grow, with increased regional connectivity planned for 2026. Thailand is already one of the region’s largest air travel markets, having generated about 1.4 trillion baht (around $43 billion) in tourism revenue in 2025.

As global aviation recovers in 2026, Thailand is benefiting significantly. It ranks 15th worldwide for international flight traffic, with volumes up roughly 9% year-on-year according to the Kasikorn Research Centre.

The country is targeting 36.7 million arrivals in 2026, signalling continued confidence in both tourism and aviation growth, according to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.
