TAP Air Portugal and Portugália Airlines have achieved a major milestone in sustainable aviation by earning the IATA Environmental Assessment (IEnvA) certification. This first-time sustainability achievement highlights their dedication to responsible aviation practices and environmental stewardship. It is the first time the two airlines have gained the prestigious environmental certification, underpinning their commitment to responsible aviation practices and good stewardship of the environment.

TAP Air Portugal is Advancing Environmental Sustainability

Based on the ISO 14001 standard, the IEnvA certification is proof of the airlines’ commitment to mitigating the environmental impacts of their activities. It highlights a variety of policies implemented by TAP and Portugália. It’s necessary to reduce the environmental footprint of their flight activities and facilities, including corporate buildings located in Portugal.

In the statement, to Travel Radar,  Luís Rodrigues, CEO of TAP Air Portugal, commented:

“This certification represents an important step in our ongoing sustainability journey. We are committed to leading by example, reducing the environmental impacts of our operations and promoting more responsible aviation. This recognition is a testament to the joint efforts of our teams and TAP’s unwavering commitment to the future of the planet.”

Key Environmental Initiatives by TAP and Portugália Airlines

Additionally, achieving IEnvA certification is just one of several sustainability initiatives TAP Air Portugal has undertaken in recent years. The airline continued its fleet renewal and modernisation program, replacing older aircraft with more efficient ones that lower carbon emissions. Additionally, TAP has progressively replaced its conventional vehicle fleet with electric and hybrid alternatives. To support this transition, TAP has installed electric vehicle charging stations on its TAP Campus for employees and visitors.

TAP’s commitment to sustainability extends beyond its fleet. In collaboration with Cateringpor. For instance, the airline launched the Sustainable Cabin project to recycle waste produced on flights arriving in Lisbon.

Supporting sustainable aviation, TAP will begin using Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) on flights from airports in the European Union, the UK, and Switzerland starting in 2025.

However, from 2025, airlines must use at least 2% SAF for these flights. To help offset the added costs of SAF, TAP will introduce a surcharge on European departures, ranging from €2 (£1.65) in Economy to €24 (£19.80) in Business class for intercontinental flights.
