SWISS and the Swiss Museum of Transport are working together to preserve Swiss aviation history. Once the last Airbus A340-300 completes its service, it is to be housed permanently at the Swiss Museum of Transport in Lucerne. The importance of the Airbus A340-300 is supported by its role as the key aircraft in SWISS’s long-haul fleet.

The SWISS Airbus A340’s connection to Switzerland’s identity

Due to the Airbus A340’s four engines and role in long-haul flights, it has become instantly recognisable for frequent travellers. It is the last four-engined aircraft in the SWISS fleet, suggesting that the A340 has become pivotal to the airline’s brand awareness. The Airbus A340 therefore establishes a strong connection to Switzerland’s identity both culturally and economically.

SWISS’s desire to donate the final Airbus A340-300 in its fleet to the Swiss Museum of Transport shows that aviation is integral to Switzerland’s broader heritage and sense of history. The Airbus A340 will play a key role within the museum, not just as a passive display, but as an experience. The aircraft type will act as a model to help museum visitors engage with the aircraft’s interior. The aircraft will be employed as a highlight within the Aviation and Space Travel exhibition area.

The logistics of transporting the aircraft model to the museum

Transporting a long-haul aircraft weighing about 125 tons to the Swiss Museum of Transport is a complex operation. The Airbus A340 must be transported from Zurich Airport (ZRH) to Lucerne, be positioned with precision, and later assimilated into the exhibition space. Transporting the aircraft to the museum is expensive. Current financial estimates assume that the transportation of the aircraft and its installation within the museum will cost millions of Swiss Francs.

SWISS has not yet decided if or how the A340 can be transported to the museum. A final decision can only be made once financing, transportation and permits have been agreed upon. SWISS and the museum have set up a fundraising committee involving Christoph Franz, President of the Swiss Museum of Transport Association, who is discussing the long-term feasibility of the project with potential supporters. A definitive decision will only be made once transportation, permits and financing have been secured.
