As winter approaches, Norway is climbing the ranks as a favourite destination for UK skiers. According to recent insights from aviation analytics firm Cirium and ski tour operator Ski Solutions, there has been a remarkable increase in demand for Norwegian ski destinations, with a 64% year-on-year surge in December 2024 bookings. This surge in popularity comes as more direct flight options have been introduced between London and Norway, making this Scandinavian escape evermore accessible for winter sports enthusiasts.

Record-Breaking Data

The increased interest in Norway’s slopes has led to a significant rise in flight availability. According to Cirium reports, December 2024 will reach a total of 872 direct flights from the UK to Norway, offering over 143,000 seats—a 14% increase from the previous year. This season’s flight routes include nine new direct options from major UK airports, making destinations such as Tromsø, Oslo, and Harstad/Narvik more accessible.

Ski Solutions also noted a 109% increase in passenger numbers for December, with particular demand for Trysil and Geilo, two popular Norwegian ski resorts showcasing stunning landscapes and a wide variety of winter sports activities. This expanded connectivity means that UK skiers have more options than ever before when it comes to hitting Norway’s renowned ski slopes and experiencing its picturesque Nordic landscapes.

Ski Resorts: New Expanded Options

To meet the growing demand in Norwegian ski breaks, Ski Solutions has added two Norwegian resorts to its portfolio: Narvik and Gausta. Narvik, located within the Arctic Circle, provides a unique skiing experience with the opportunity to witness the magical Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights) while on the slopes. The recently introduced direct flights from London to Harstad-Narvik airport further enhances accessibility to this enchanting destination. Meanwhile, Gausta offers a combination of higher-level and beginner-friendly slopes, drawing families and more seasoned skiers seeking memorable winter getaways.

Two of Norway’s top ski resorts, Trysil and Geilo, have witnessed impressive growth in interest among UK skiers. Geilo has seen a 126% year-on-year increase in bookings for December 2024, while Trysil has grown by 42%. These resorts provide an ideal blend of winter sports and untouched Nordic beauty, attracting families, friend groups and solo adventurers. With breathtaking views, reliable snowfall and activities like dog sledding, ice karting, snowmobiling, ice bathing and a sauna view of Ustevann. It is no secret that Norway offers a compelling alternative to traditional European ski destinations for the 2024-25 season.

A Growing Destination Year-Round

Norway’s charm as a winter sports destination extends far beyond the festive season. Ski Solutions reports that bookings for the entire 2024 – 2025 season are 57% higher than last year, with passenger numbers up by 83%. The demand is particularly pronounced for Northern Norway, where the chance to view the Aurora Borealis complements the thrill of skiing in some of Europe’s most breathtaking landscapes. This trend marks Norway’s rise as a top destination for UK skiers, who are increasingly drawn to authentic Nordic experiences and expanding accessibility.

Managing Director of Ski Solutions, Ian Mcrllath comments:

The combination of well preserved natural beauty and world-class skiing has created an unparalleled offering for those looking to book a ski holiday outside of the usual go to destinations. With an increase in direct flights and a growing appetite for adventure, we’re seeing an increase in travellers embracing Norway as a top choice for the upcoming ski season. The significant year-on-year increase in bookings to resorts like Geilo and Trysil highlights just how much UK skiers are drawn to Norway’s charm and versatility.
