Thunderstorms and unsettled weather created fresh disruption for air travel across the United States on Nov. 4, with several airports reporting delays and operational challenges. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) warned that storms could affect flights in Florida, Tennessee and other parts of the country.

Thunderstorm Put Pressure on Major U.S. Airports

According to the FAA’s Daily Air Traffic Report, thunderstorms may affect flights at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL), Miami International Airport (MIA), Memphis International Airport (MEM), and Nashville International Airport (BNA). Other parts of the country are also expected to experience challenging conditions.

Rain and wind are forecast around Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport (SDF) and Indianapolis International Airport (IND), while Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport (MSP) could experience rain and low cloud cover.

Wind conditions may also affect operations at Chicago’s O’Hare and Midway airports, Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW), Dallas Love Field (DAL), and San Francisco International Airport (SFO).

The disruptions follow significant weather-related interruptions in Houston on Nov. 3. Heavy rain and thunderstorms prompt the FAA to issue ground stops at George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) and William P. Hobby Airport (HOU). Both restrictions were lifted during the afternoon, although delays at IAH continued.

Weather Disruptions Can Have Lasting Effects on Flight Schedules

Thunderstorms can affect aviation operations through lighting, reduced visibility, strong winds and hazardous conditions for ground crews. Even after storms move away, delays can continue as aircraft, flight crews and airport resources are repositioned. Weather-related delays can create operational backlogs, affecting aircraft arrivals, gate availability and baggage handling even after conditions improve.

Travel Radar has previously reported on similar disruptions in its coverage of extreme weather in Chicago, where storms in July 2026 caused hundreds of cancellations and delays at O’Hare and Midway

Passengers travelling through potentially affected airports should check their flight status directly with their airline before leaving for the airport
