Ryanair announced it plans to invest £40 million in Glasgow Prestwick Airport (PIK) for the maintenance facilities’ expansion. This investment programme will create more job opportunities, including 60 apprenticeship roles.

Prestwick Airport expansion

PIK is located in the town of South Ayrshire and serves the west of Scotland. Ryanair has six bays at the airport for its aircraft maintenance.

Now, the airline is planning to construct a four-bay hangar and additional component workshops. After finishing the construction, the airport will become Ryanair’s largest European maintenance base with 10 bays.

Ryanair’s chief executive officer, Eddie Wilson, said:

“It will be a key part of how we will maintain and support our fleet as we continue to grow to 800 aircraft and 300 million passengers by 2034.”

The airline had already invested £5 million in its Prestwick Training Academy, which opened in October 2024.

Ryanair investment creates jobs

The airline announced that the expansion programme will create 450 jobs and support 1,200 engineering and mechanical jobs in Ayrshire and provide long-term employment and training opportunities.

Among those jobs, some are skilled aircraft mechanics, avionics specialists, structures technicians and supervisory engineering positions.

The U.K. government and the Scottish government have also planned to invest in the maintenance facilities expansion.

The U.K. is investing £4.9 million in the construction of a new hangar as part of its £32 million investment in the Prestwick Aerospace Cluster.

The Scottish government is joining hands with Scottish Enterprise and investing more than £15 million for Ryanair’s maintenance facilities expansion at Prestwick Airport.
