Qatar Airways has announced plans to expand its Australian network with the launch of direct passenger services between Hamad International Airport and Western Sydney International Airport (WSI), with flights set to commence on Dec. 15, 2027.
Ticket sales are scheduled to open on Dec. 19, 2026.
The addition of Western Sydney International will make WSI Qatar Airways’ seventh Australian destination, joining its existing network serving Sydney Kingsford Smith, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide, and Canberra.

Qatar Airways in Australia
Qatar Airways first began operations to Australia in 2009 with the launch of its inaugural route into Melbourne. Since then, it has steadily expanded its presence across the country, developing a significant footprint in the Australian market.
Despite its growth, the airline has faced restrictions imposed by the Australian federal government regarding the number of services it can operate into major airports, including Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, and Perth.
Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport’s overnight curfew between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m., which restricts aircraft movements, affected the scheduling flexibility for airlines operating long-haul services.
These limitations have been the subject of considerable debate in recent years, particularly as demand for international travel continues to rise.

A curfew-free airport
Western Sydney International Airport operates 24 hours a day without a curfew, allowing greater scheduling flexibility.
Qatar Airways can coordinate the new service with connections through its Doha hub.
The airline said the route would complement the broader growth plans of its partnership with Virgin Australia.
Route details and aircraft
The new service will initially operate three times per week, with flights scheduled on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
According to the published schedule, the Doha to Western Sydney flight will depart at 1:40 a.m. and arrive at 11:45 p.m. local time.
Qatar Airways will operate the route with a Boeing 777-300ER, featuring 42 business class seats with Qsuite and 312 economy class seats.
This announcement marks another significant milestone for Western Sydney International Airport as it continues to attract major international services ahead of its development into Sydney’s second international gateway.
