Phu Quoc International Airport (PQC) is set to undergo a major upgrade as part of a new expansion project aimed at transforming the facility into a fully automated aviation hub. The initiative, led by Sun Group in partnership with Société Internationale de Télécommunications Aéronautiques (SITA), will introduce end-to-end passenger processing technology ahead of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) 2027. The expansion is expected to support up to 24 million passengers annually when the new terminal opens in 2027.

Phu Quoc airport expansion to introduce full automation
The Phu Quoc airport expansion includes the construction of a new Terminal 2, designed to deliver a fully self-service passenger journey. Travellers will be able to complete check-in, baggage drop and boarding through automated systems, reducing the need for manual processing.
SITA will deploy a range of technologies, including Smart Path kiosks, self-service bag drop units and automated boarding gates, all integrated through biometric systems. The terminal will also include real-time baggage tracking and airport management systems to support operations.
According to Nguyen Chi Thanh, President of Sun Group, the Phu Quoc airport expansion reflects a broader strategy to modernise Vietnam’s aviation infrastructure. He said:
“SITA’s proven expertise and end-to-end technology capabilities will play a key role in helping us deliver smarter, more efficient, and seamless passenger experiences.”

Wider Vietnam aviation strategy linked to airport expansion
The Phu Quoc airport expansion is part of a wider plan by Sun Group to develop multiple airport projects across Vietnam. The company said the operating model introduced at Phu Quoc will serve as a template for future developments, including airports in Phan Thiet, Con Dao and Rach Gia.
SITA said the project supports the growth of Vietnam’s aviation market and will help position Phu Quoc as a regional hub. Sumesh Patel, President for Asia-Pacific at SITA, affirms:
“By bringing together SITA’s end-to-end airport technologies, we are delivering smarter, more efficient, and scalable airport operations.”
The airport will be operated in partnership with Changi Airports International, with the Phu Quoc airport expansion also linked to wider tourism and infrastructure development on the island. The project is scheduled for completion in July 2027.
