Shanghai Pudong International Airport Cargo Terminal Co. Ltd  (PACTL) has successfully upgraded its Cargo Management System to Hermes 5 with minimal disruption to operations.

Who is PACTL?

Founded in 1999, PACTL is one of the world’s largest single air cargo terminal operators. A Chinese-German joint venture between Shanghai Airport Group, Lufthansa Cargo and JHJ Logistics Management, it handles up to two million tonnes of cargo yearly.

Hermes 5 boasts the complete digitalisation of import and export management and transit processes within cargo warehouses.

The rollout was implemented across four cargo terminals: three at Pudong International Airport and one at Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport.

To guarantee minimal logistical disturbance, Hermes Logistics Technologies (HLT) ensured the upgrade was completed within the shortest timeframe possible.

Yuval Baruch, Chief Executive Officer of Hermes Logistics Technologies said:

This was an upgrade, but on a massive scale that required comprehensive discovery work and preparation to ensure the switchover was both simultaneous and short, and downtime was reduced as much as possible. A key element of the project was the integration of Hermes 5 with other technology partners working with PACTL, through our standard and bespoke APIs. These enable full integration with other solutions, so data can be shared and operational efficiencies gained.

Application Programming Interface, or API, is software that allows multiple programmes to talk to each other, allowing integration between new and existing applications.

The upgrade involved a comprehensive needs analysis, database tuning, and training all delivered in Chinese using the Hermes Learning Management System (LMS).

Carsten Hernig, Deputy General Manager VP Sales & Marketing and Production of PACTL stated:

This upgrade has opened the door for us to provide customised services while also improving operational convenience. The partnership with HLT enhances our operational efficiency and ensures we stay at the forefront of technological advancements in the air cargo industry. Hermes 5 offers Cargo iQ messaging services such as FOW and FIW, and we have opted for a localised deployment to maximise data security.

PACTL join a long line of global cargo handlers including Etihad Airport Services Cargo, Georgi Group, and Groundforce Portugal, who have already upgraded to the cloud-based management system.

Hermes 5 uses the latest technology to offer cargo management services as effectively and efficiently as possible. The speed of the upgrade by HLT which kept upheaval to an absolute minimum, has proven that changing management systems does not need to cause undue disruption to operations.
