Originair Airline will soon cease its scheduled flights between Wellington and Westport, starting on May 1, 2026. The reason behind the cancellation is strictly financial.

The Cancellation of the Service
The regional airline Originair has decided to cancel its service between Wellington and Westport, in New Zealand. The carrier picked up the route after Sounds Air, a New Zealand regional airline, withdrew from operating it. Through the cancellation, Westport Airport (WSZ), will be left without scheduled flights.
Additionally, if the government decides to financially support Westport’s airport, the service will remain in operation. Roughly, the route costs USD $290,000 to shareholders per annum, which has significantly increased since the oil crisis in the Middle East.
The carrier applied for New Zealand’s regional infrastructure fund (RIF), however, no progress was made leading the airline to end operations. The Buller district council, which is responsible for Westport Airport, also applied for RIF, but it was denied.

Impact Caused by the Cancellation
The route linking the cities is of great importance to Westport, as it’s the only airborne connection the city has to the capital. Residents that seek special medical assistance, have family in the city, and much more, will be significantly impacted by the ceasing of the route.
Additionally, tourism in New Zealand’s West Coast is of great importance to the region. In stopping the route, the attractiveness of the area may decrease giving its low accessibility. A direct flight to Wellington links the residents to the city, where they also contribute to the tourism industry.
