To help cap off the end of another exciting year of travel, British Airways have announced their “20 for ’25” top destinations as a part of their January sale. Destinations on the list include Rimini and Salerno in Italy, Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia and Orlando in the USA. However, in their own words ‘topping the ‘20 for ‘25’ list’ is the airline’s exciting new route to Tbilisi, Georgia. The launch of direct flights from London Heathrow (LHR) to Tbilisi (TBS) begins on 30 March 2025. This exciting new flight path will operate four times weekly and promises to make Georgia’s vibrant capital more accessible than ever. With that being said, let us take a closer look at this inviting travel opportunity that needs to be on your radar in 2025.

A bit about the new route

Tbilisi, Georgia, will be back on British Airways’ route network after over a decade, offering European city-break lovers an enticing fusion of culture, history, and cuisine. British Airways’ Chief Planning and Strategy Officer, Neil Chernoff spoke on the announcement of the new route:

“We expect this to be a popular route with the leisure market, which has seen a strong comeback since 2019.”

The flight schedules have been thoughtfully designed to make onward connections a breeze, whether you’re jetting off to New York or exploring other vibrant European hot spots like Madrid and Barcelona, which are not directly served from Georgia. The flights will operate on the Airbus A320neo, an efficient, modern aircraft.

Key details:

  • Flight frequency: Four weekly flights (Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday).
  • Flight timings: Departing LHR at 21:25, arriving TBS at 05:30 the next day. Return flights leave TBS at 07:30, landing in LHR at 10:00.
  • Price: Return fares start from £275, with two-night British Airways Holidays packages available from £369pp, inclusive of flights and a stay at the 4.5-star Moxy Tbilisi.

With its strategic flight timings, this route is perfect for connections to US destinations such as New York and domestic UK cities like Manchester and Edinburgh.

Reasons to visit Tbilisi

Upon the announcement the Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia, Mariam Kvrivishvili made clear that:

“We are proud that flagship carrier British Airways has decided to enter the Georgian market, which is important recognition for our country.”

Nestled within the crossroads of Europe and Asia, Tbilisi is a city steeped in charm, culture, and history. Known for its cobbled streets, ancient architecture, and vibrant food scene, the Georgian capital is fast becoming a must-visit destination.

A rich cultural tapestry

Tbilisi’s Old Town boasts a unique blend of architecture, influenced by the city’s diverse history. From Byzantine and Soviet-era buildings to modern marvels, the city itself paints a fascinating story for tourists. Don’t miss a stroll along the Mtkvari River or a visit to the iconic Bridge of Peace.

The birthplace of wine

Georgia is hailed as the birthplace of wine, with an 8,000-year-old wine making tradition that continues to thrive. Visitors can indulge in a glass of traditional Georgian qvevri. Visit a UNESCO World Heritage site where they use large clay egg-shaped vessels that are buried underground to ferment and age the wine. Exploring Tbilisi’s numerous wine bars and cellars is a must do experience in the Eastern European capital.

Surrounding natural wonders

For those with a taste for thrill and adventure, the cable car over Tbilisi offers 360-degree views of the Georgian capital as you glide above the city.  The cable car takes you to Narikala Fortress, the 4th century fort, which offers serene sunset views. Slightly further afield, the canyons and caves near Kutaisi, are just a short trip from the capital. For those mountaineers among you, Tbilisi is the perfect base for exploring the Caucasus Mountains, host to the highest peak in Europe.
