Lufthansa plans to take over ground services at Munich Airport

Lufthansa plans to take over ground services at Munich Airport (MUC) later this year. Currently, Swissport Losch GmbH & Co. KG is a well-established ground handling service provider co-owned by Swissport Cargo Services Deutschland GmbH and Losch Airport Service München GmbH.

How does Lufthansa plan to take over ground services?

Lufthansa Group Airlines is planning for a 100% acquisition of Swissport Losch GmbH & Co. KG at Munich Airport (MUC). The acquisition of Swissport Losch GmbH & Co. KG is subject to the granting of a license, the commercial agreement, and the approval of the relevant antitrust authorities. In a strategic letter of intent, that outlines a business’s intentions with a particular deal, Lufthansa stresses its commitment to Munich as one of the strategically important locations in its network. The successful acquisition would mean increased operational stability and reliability. This shift aligns with Lufthansa’s strategy to strengthen Munich as a key European hub by increasing control over its ground operations.

The existing shareholders will continue to advise on the transition to ground services to Lufthansa. As part of the planned takeover, Lufthansa intends to retain the jobs of the employees at Swissport Losch GmbH & Co. KG and to offer them long-term prospects.

Marc Losch, CEO LOSCH Airport Service says:

The future of Swissport Losch and its employees in Munich is very important to us. We are pleased that we can offer our employees a secure future with this perspective.

What are the services for passengers?

This is what the acquisition and operational stability and reliability mean as services for passengers:

  • Owing to in-house ground services, passengers can expect faster baggage handling.
  • Passengers can also expect ease in check-ins and boarding process.
  • Smoother ground operations can improve connections for transfer passengers which is a key aspect of Lufthansa group strategy.

Jens Ritter, CEO of Lufthansa Airlines, emphasised while speaking of services for passengers:

Our goal is to enhance efficiency and improve the travel experience for our passengers. Swissport Losch has been a strong partner with a dedicated team known for excellent service.

Additionally, he also added, for employees who gave their contribution to Swissport Losch’s functioning at MUC:

Securing jobs and improving the travel experience at Munich Airport is a top priority. Swissport Losch has been a trusted partner, with a highly skilled team known for professionalism and outstanding service.

It means that from the perspective of employees, Lufthansa is trying to provide them with long-term job security.
