While the Riviera may steal the limelight, France’s Provence region is where life truly slows down. Blanketed in fragrant lavender fields, dotted with sleepy hilltop towns and sun-kissed vineyards, Provence is a sensory escape just a short flight from London. From violet valleys to crisp glasses of gris rosé, Provence seduces enchanted artists, wanderers and wine lovers with its sensory richness.

Lavender Fields: Provence in Bloom

Summer in Provence is synonymous with lavender. From early June through mid-August, the region bursts into violet bloom, offering some of the most iconic floral landscapes in Europe. The Valensole Plateau, an hour north of Aix-en-Provence, is among the most famous — its rolling hills engulfed by fragrant lavender fields that seem to stretch forever. Travellers can also drive the Route de Manosque, stopping by family-run farms like Lavandes Angelvin, which offers tours and artisanal lavender products.

Further east, the sleepy hillside town of Sault, perched high in the Vaucluse mountains, hosts the region’s largest annual lavender festival on August 15. A lesser-known gem, Notre-Dame de Sénanque Abbey, offers a more serene but equally breathtaking experience. Wrapped in blooming rows of lavender, this 12th-century Cistercian abbey is breathtaking — though best visited early to beat the crowds. For those willing to wander off the beaten track, the Drôme region to the north promises quiet lavender trails and hidden villages like Valaurie, ideal for biking or a fragrant summer stroll.

Gris Rosé: Provence in a Glass

No Provençal journey is complete without a sip of its signature gris rosé — the palest pink of wines, pressed gently from Grenache, Cinsault, or Pinot Noir grapes. Known for its pale hue and dry, floral notes, gris rosé is typically made with minimal skin contact, resulting in a delicate finish that pairs perfectly with summer evenings. While not exclusive to the region, many of Provence’s rosés mirror the vin gris profile. Vineyards across the Vaucluse and Var departments welcome visitors with tastings and vineyard tours.

One standout stop is the acclaimed Château d’Esclans, home of the world-famous Whispering Angel rosé. Here, the rosé experience becomes a ritual — enjoyed with Provençal cuisine, sun-grown olives, and sweeping views of lavender beds and olive groves. Just 30 minutes from Terre Blanche Resort, the estate offers a peek into the craftsmanship behind France’s most exported pink wine. Pair your visit with a chilled glass on a shaded patio, where vine-draped hills stretch into the horizon.

For those looking to blend rural charm with refined comfort, Terre Blanche — a luxurious resort near Cannes. Once owned by James Bond actor Sean Connery, the estate is now a sanctuary of villa-style rooms, Michelin-starred dining, and a captivating spa complex. Surrounded by lavender gardens, it’s an idyllic base for exploring the inland beauty of Provence, the Pays de Fayence villages and of course, the Côte d’Azur.

Guests can indulge in standout Provençal cuisine at Le Faventia, where a six-course menu reimagines traditional classics like pissaladiere (a french onion tart). While breakfast is a feast of flaky pastries, fresh local produce, and the region’s famed cheeses and honey. Just minutes away, Lake Saint Cassien offers rowing excursions, and nearby markets hum with artisanal treasures. Whether sipping gris rosé under cypress trees or getting lost in fragrant lavender fields, Terre Blanche captures the quiet luxury Provence is known for. With direct flights from London to Marseille starting at only £69 with British Airways, the fragrance and flavour of Provence has never been closer!
