A man in his 70s has died following a light-aircraft crash at Sherburn Aero Club in North Yorkshire on Sunday, November 2, 2025. The pilot from Leeds was the only occupant of the privately owned aircraft at the time of the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Crash

Police were called to the scene just before 1 pm after a privately owned aircraft attempted a routine landing at the runway at Sherburn Aero Club near Leeds, but encountered difficulties. Emergency services responded quickly to the scene; however, the pilot was pronounced dead shortly after their arrival.

North Yorkshire Police released a statement regarding the crash and the pilot:

His family is currently being supported by specially-trained officers and our thoughts are with them at this difficult time. We are currently guarding the scene and the Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) has been made aware. We are not currently able to release any further information about the incident or deceased.

The AAIB have launched a formal investigation into the crash.

Context and Community of Sherburn Aero Club

Based at Sherburn in Elmet Airfield, Sherburn Aero Club describes itself as “Yorkshire’s  Premier Flying Club and Training School” and issued a statement notifying its members and visitors of the incident:

Due to a flying-related incident at the club today, the airfield is currently closed. Please do not travel to the club. The airfield, including the cafe, will remain closed Monday 3 November. The Flight Desk will be available for telephone enquiries only.

The club is a well-established aviation centre and boasts pilot training, trial flying lessons, a restaurant and bar, and an outdoor area ideal for a family day out. However, as of Monday, the club remains closed until further details are provided and more information is available.

Sherburn in Elmet adds to a growing list of locations that have experienced a light aircraft crash. The dangers are apparent and blatantly lethal. What should be done to limit any further casualties? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
