An Ambitious Project and Future Plans

Within Incheon International Airport’s High Tech Aviation Complex, a new aircraft maintenance hangar will be constructed, funded by a KRW 176 billion joint investment. This agreement between Korean Air and IIAC was signed at the Grand Hyatt Incheon, with the attendance of Vice Chairman of Air, Keehong Woo; President & CEO of IIAC, Hak-jae Lee, as well as more than 90 representaives from government, local authorities, and the National Assembly.

During this event, Vice Chairman Woo shared:

” A maintenance hangar is not merely a building; it is a cradle of safety and a vital foundation for upholding Korean Air’s top priority of absolute safety. From the earliest design phase, we will ensure this new hangar becomes the safest, most advanced and most exemplary maintenance base – a true stronghold of aviation safety.”

This project aims to create a next-generation maintenance facility built on a 69,299-square-metre site, able to accommodate two widebody aircrafts and one narrowbody aircraft. Additionally, it will allow for airframe inspections, component checks, and complex heavy maintenance and modification work, which will be carried out by approximately 300 personnel. This includes Korean Air’s expert maintenance workforce.

Scheduled to begin construction in 2027, with operations targeted for late 2029, the aim of this project it to further strengthen Korean Air’s world-class maintenance expertise and operational capabilities. There is no doubt that with these upcoming manufacturing projects, the airline will grow as a premier global Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) hub.

More On Korean Air

Founded 55 years ago, Korean Air is now considered one of the world’s top 20 airlines, having been granted numerous awards for its outstanding performance. It has received a 5-star airline rating from Skytrax, alongside Airline of the Year from both Air Transport World and Airline Ratings. In 2024, Korean Air carried more than 23 million passengers, serving 116 cities in 39 countries across 5 continents. Its current fleet consists of 164 aircrafts and over 20,000 employees.

Expansion is a key part of Korean Air and, alongside this new hanger, there have been many other advancements in major infrastructure projects. For example, preparations have been made for a KRW 578 billion project to build Asia’s largest engine maintenance facility. This will be built on Yeongjong Island in Incheon. Additionally, in Bucheon, Gyeonggi Province, there are plans for a KRW 1.2 trillion Future Urban Air Mobility (UAM) & Aviation Safety R&D Center.

A Korean Air representative provided deeper insight on this subject:

“We will work closely with Incheon International Airport Corporation to ensure the seamless and timely progress of the project. Guided by our Safety First principle, Korean Air will continue to drive innovation and transformation as we move toward becoming the world’s most beloved airline.”

Other manufacturing plans may still be announced.
