Italy’s ITA Airways to Fast-track Additional Widebodies for 2027

Italy’s ITA Airways growth plan is to fast-track the entry into service of four widebodies by 2027, to meet the target of having 30 long-haul aircraft in the fleet by 2030. The CEO, Jörg Eberhart, said in an interview with Italian daily La Repubblica that they are working on a more ambitious fleet plan, but didn’t specify which aircraft are to be fast-tracked.

A Little About ITA

ITA Airways (Italia Trasporto Aereo) is the state-owned flag carrier of Italy, based at Rome Fiumicino. Launched in October 2021, it is co-owned by the Italian Ministry of Economy and Finance (59%) and Lufthansa Group (41%). While initially in SkyTeam, it is transitioning to Star Alliance following the Lufthansa Group investment.
It operates a modern, all-Airbus fleet (99+ aircraft) with a mix of Airbus A320neo family for short/medium-haul and A330neo/A350 for long-haul routes. Their focus is on efficiency and Italian service, and it serves over 70 domestic, European, and intercontinental destinations, with key hubs in Rome Fiumicino (FCO) and Milan Linate (LIN).

The Fleet

The airline’s narrowbody fleet:

  • 12 A220-100s
  • 18 A220-300s (with two more ordered)
  • Ten A319-100s
  • 17 A320-200s
  • 19 A320-200Ns (11 more to be delivered)
  • Seven A321-200NX(LR)s (two more to be delivered).

Responding to union criticisms of ITA’s current growth plan to add one long-haul aircraft per year for the next four years, Eberhart (the CEO) said management was finalising a new plan that would see two widebodies added in 2026 and two more in 2027.

Already operating 25 widebodies in its fleet (five A330-200s, 14 A330-900Ns and six A350-900s), ITA Airways still awaits delivery of three more A330-900Ns and two A350-900s.

The Future of ITA

The airline is currently evaluating potential new transatlantic routes, including Rome – Newark, subject to regulatory approval of its A++ alliance with United Airlines, Air Canada, and Lufthansa.

CEO, Jörg Eberhart, said,

“We’re waiting for a response from the authorities, confident they’re working on it. We’re confident they’ll give us the green light by November 2026,”

Despite plans to expand, Eberhart said that ITA plans to retain its current brand while selectively drawing on the heritage of Alitalia, its predecessor.

Following strikes and union pressure, they plan to recruit 100 more pilots and 400 flight attendants as part of broader efforts to stabilise labour relations and support steady growth.
