In the Beginning…

The 4th of July 1950 was when the first flight commenced, which began the social and economic positive development of the two cities. A Douglas DC-3 twin-engine aircraft ensured that these flights went ahead at an altitude of 4km.

This aircraft was used on three weekly flights from Madrid to Santander, accommodating 28 passengers and 2-3 crew members.

Moving forward to 1967, the next aircraft used for this route was Iberia’s DC-9/32. Previously addressed as the ‘Ciudad de Santander,’ this aircraft could accommodate more passengers and crew members while getting them from Madrid to Santander.

Moving Forwards to the 21st Century

In 2005, the capacity for passengers increased dramatically to between 186 and 194 thanks to the use of the Airbus A321 aircraft. The frequency of the flights also increased markedly, with approximately 22 flights over 4 days a week.

Cantabria’s tourism is expected to be boosted thanks to the Madrid-Santander route’s popularity and the fuselage undergoing a unique decoration. Promotion for Cantabria’s tourism is being considered, while Iberia continues to provide flights of about 35 euros to its passengers.

Iberia’s connectivity commitment to Cantabria has been noticeable for the past 75 years, and hopefully, it will remain the case for 75 more.
