Romania’s national carrier TAROM has announced that its first Boeing 737 MAX aircraft has completed its test flight ahead of its planned delivery at the end of August. The Boeing 737 MAX 8 will become the first of several new-generation aircraft joining TAROM’s fleet as part of the airline’s ongoing fleet renewal programme. The aircraft will be named after Romanian football coach Mircea Lucescu.
New Aircraft to Support TAROM Fleet Renewal Strategy
The introduction of the Boeing 737 MAX aircraft marks a significant step in TAROM’s efforts to modernise its fleet and improve operational efficiency.
The airline has been pursuing Boeing 737 MAX aircraft since 2023, signing a leasing agreement in 2024 to acquire two aircraft. Further deliveries are planned as part of its long-term fleet renewal strategy.
This Boeing offers improved fuel efficiency compared with previous-generation aircraft, helping airlines reduce operating costs while increasing passenger capacity and range flexibility.
TAROM Continues Restructuring Efforts Amid Financial Challenges
The fleet renewal programme comes as TAROM continues working on its restructuring plan amid ongoing financial pressures.
Romania’s interim Minister of Transport, Radu Miruță, recently highlighted several challenges affecting the airline, including rising fuel prices, delays in aircraft deliveries and the need to update TAROM’s business model.
As part of its recovery strategy, the airline plans to introduce early-booking campaigns, strengthen marketing initiatives, and implement measures to increase passenger numbers and reduce operating expenses.
Miruță stated:
“As long as there is a plan being developed with sound arguments and justification, I believe it is only right that we try to convince the European Commission.”
The arrival of this Boeing aircraft is expected to play an important role in TAROM’s future growth plans as the airline works to strengthen its position within the European aviation market.
