Looking to further your aviation career? Well, Brazilian aerospace manufacturer Embraer has announced a Postgraduate course in Software and Data Science commencing March of next year.

With thirty places available, the course, administrated in partnership with the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE), will offer remote classes for R$3,000 and monthly scholarships for R$5,000.

Prospective applicants are required to sit exams to demonstrate knowledge of Algorithms, Data Structures, Probability and Statistics, as well as Mathematics and Computer Science. Finally, they will need to sit a face-to-face interview.

Professor Adriano Sarmento, course coordinator for UFPE stated:

“The PES provides a differentiated education where students learn how the concepts covered in class can be applied to solve real problems in the aerospace industry. This is thanks to a strong interaction with professors and Embraer employees. Additionally, the curriculum and course content are evaluated and updated every year to meet the new demands arising from technological advancements in the field. The results of the program over the past three years have been exceptional, as evidenced by the graduates’ high employment rate.”

All applicants are required to have an Exact Sciences degree from between 2021 and 2024, as well as having advanced English skills. The 30 successful applicants will be split between 10 specialists in Data Science and 20 in Embedded Software, and the course will last for nine months.

Despite being online, candidates will receive mentorship and guardianship from current Embraer employees, and will also partake in activities to develop soft skills.

Application is free, and interested individuals can do so by visiting Embraer’s website (in Portuguese).

Who are Embraer?

There had been attempts to develop a domestic Brazilian aircraft industry since the 1940s and ’50s, however, it wasn’t until 1969 that Empresa Brasileira de Aeronáutica (or Embraer, for short) was founded as a government-owned company, with its first aircraft being the EMB 110 Bandeirante.

Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Embraer focused predominantly on military aircraft until it launched the EMB 120 Brasilia, a twenty-seat turboprop aircraft designed for the regional market, in 1985.

Having been state-owned since its inception, Embraer was eventually sold to private investors in 1994. Privatisation helped to avoid the rising risk of bankruptcy and later led to the company being floated on the New York and Brazilian Stock Exchange.

Embraer still has a sizable interest in military aircraft as well as an ongoing partnership with the Brazilian Government but is more widely known for its regional and business jets, such as the Legacy 600 and the Praetor 500.

In 2018, there was a failed joint venture between Boeing and Embraer which would have led to Boeing owning 80% of Embraer’s commercial arm. A second joint venture was also planned: the creation of the C-390 military transport plane, and the company being rebranded as Boeing Embraer Defence.

However, in 2020, the venture was permanently cancelled due to a combination of financial losses attributed to Covid-19, and the grounding of the 737 MAX.
