A Smoky Return to London

The Airbus A330-900 departing for Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) left London at 10:00 BST and was carrying 259 passengers when the incident occurred, reaching an altitude of 36,000 ft (11,100m) before making an abrupt U-turn over the Irish Sea and landing back at LHR at approximately 11:35 BST.

Crew members on the flight reported fumes in the cockpit soon after the flight left the Cornish coast. Pilots donned oxygen masks and made an immediate return to London, communicating with air traffic controllers and ensuring a safe return.

A spokesperson for Delta Airlines said:

Delta flight 59 from London-Heathrow to Boston on October 5, 2025, landed safely after returning to LHR due to reports of smoke in the aircraft. The flight will operate tomorrow, and Delta’s customer team is assisting customers with accomodations and reebooking. We apologize to our customers for the delay, but safety for our customers and crew will always be delta’s top priority.

For the time being, the plane, N411DX, is returning to Boston empty for inspection, and travellers had their flights delayed until Monday.

The quick action and decision-making ensured a safe return for all on the flight to Boston. However, the incident highlights the presence of fumes on flights and the risks they pose. Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
