On Sunday, at 09:07 a.m. (UTC+9) South Korean local time, a flight from Bangkok (BKK) to Muan (MWX) crashes at the Muan International Airport, in South Jeolla Province. The site is about 179 miles away from Seoul, South Korea. Jeju Air operates the aircraft Jeju JJA-2216 flying from Bangkok to Muan that crashed during landing.
Cause behind Bangkok to Muan plane crash: Under investigation
South Korea’s Yonhap news agency reports that the incident occurred as the aircraft veered off the runway during landing. It crashed into a wall as the flames erupted from the aircraft at the southern airport.
The possible causes behind the mishap are under investigation. Further, the investigations reveal that the landing gear failed to deploy on landing which led to the belly-landing of the aircraft. Additionally, the investigations suspect a bird strike on ENG2 on approach.
ADSB Data confirms that the same aircraft, Jeju Air flight 7C8135, was declared an emergency yesterday en route from Beijing to Jeju and diverted to Seoul.
Rescue Operation on the site
Emergency services quickly arrived at the scene and began the rescue operation. The emergency office has confirmed that there were 175 passengers on board with 6 flight attendants. Further, the emergency office confirms casualties reporting at least 47 deaths but without confirming the identities of the deceased.
The incident is another plane crash incident this week after Azerbaijan Airlines plane crashes near Kazakhstan’s Aktau airport.
