The Red Sea International Airport (RSI) is revolutionising the aviation industry. With the establishment of an aviation oasis, the Red Sea Global development group is paving the way for new industry standards in sustainability and luxury travel. Embodied by the broader Red Sea destination, the airport reflects an approach to air travel that is as much sustainable as it is stylish.
Sustainable Design and Operations
Since its official open in September 2023, the RSI is setting new standards for environmental responsibility in the competitive and increasingly eco-conscious commercial aviation sector. RSI is a flagship project of Red Sea Global, owned by the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia and chaired by the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia.
Powered entirely by solar energy and operating on 100 percent renewable energy, The RSI stands out as an eminent new development in sustainable design. The facility operates sustainably alongside, and in service to, the greater Red Sea destination. Branded as one of the world’s most ambitious regenerative tourism destinations, the Red Sea project includes multiple resorts and private residences. Spanning Saudi Arabia’s picturesque west coast, the project is committed to clean energy. This commitment is complemented by one of the world’s largest off-grid battery storage facilities, boasting a capacity of over 1,200MWh. The innovative system significantly reduces carbon emissions. The facility ensures the airport and surrounding areas are powered by sunlight, day and night.
In keeping with the rest of the Red Sea Global project, the airport’s design and operation prioritises environmental efficiency. The RSI’s operational features boast innovation and style. A pod-like terminal structure allows for an independent operation, optimising energy consumption. Like the facility itself, all airport vehicles are powered by renewable energy or electricity. Functioning as an aviation oasis in the desert, the airport’s design also reduces air conditioning needs. Therefore, the natural ventilation afforded by shaded palm and shrub areas facilitate a lush and welcoming climate. In the same fashion, the incorporation of internal and external gardens enhance traveller well-being. These features contribute to RSI’s pursuit of a LEED platinum sustainability rating. The rating will further cement the airport’s position as a leader in sustainable development.
Smart Technology and Enhanced Guest Experience
Not only is the RSI environmentally conscious; it’s also at the forefront of technological innovation. The airport showcases a range of technological features, facilitating the smooth reception and transfer of travellers. A smart luggage system minimises passenger dwell time. The airport also has a direct luggage delivery service to hotel rooms for guests staying at Red Sea retreats. An advanced digital experience also allows passengers to fast-track their way through the airport. Boarding passes, passport control and luggage handling are all easily managed via mobile app. The airport employs cutting-edge systems to streamline passenger flow. The RSI is partnered with the multinational technology company SITA. A SITA Flex and Maestro Departure Control System automate check-in and departure processes. Meanwhile, a fast-tracked travel document authorisation system uses real-time data to ensure expedited immigration.
Expecting to accommodate an annual number of one million guests by 2030, RSI is aiming to process passengers with efficiency and speed. The integration of these systems allows RSI to handle high passenger volumes efficiently while still providing a luxurious and personalised service, setting it apart from traditional airports.
Flight Operations and Future Plans
The RSI is operated by daa International. The company commenced operational responsibility with the inaugural flight from Riyadh touching down on 21 September 2023. Since then, the state-of-the-art aviation facility has been steadily expanding its flight operations. As of January 2025, the airport offers both domestic and international flights to a limited number of destinations. Despite its remote desert location, the airport is positioned within an eight-hour flight from 85 percent of the world’s population. Currently, RSI serves flights to Riyadh (RUH) four times a week and Jeddah (JED) twice per week. Meanwhile, the airport has also begun its international operations with flights to Dubai (DXB) twice per week. For now, Saudi Arabian Airlines (Saudia) and flydubai are the only two airlines serving RSI.
The airport’s management has outlined plans for future expansion. Plans include expanding connectivity across the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region. The European market is also a priority for the airport, with a particular focus on Germany and the United Kingdom. Ultimately, RSI has also expressed long-term aspirations of establishing routes to America, China and other distant markets. As the RSI continues to expand its operations and connectivity, it remains committed to its core principles of sustainability and luxury. By setting new benchmarks in renewable energy use, smart technology integration and guest experience, RSI is not just an aviation oasis but a glimpse into the future of sustainable air travel.
