U.S. cargo operator Atlas Air has confirmed an order for 20 next-generation Airbus A350F aircraft from European manufacturer Airbus, becoming the programme’s largest customer to date. Cargo demand grew 4.1% year on year in October 2025, marking the eighth consecutive month of expansion, contributing to demand for new-generation freighter aircraft as fleets are modernised.

First Airbus Purchase Signals Strategic Shift

The deal represents Atlas Air’s first-ever aircraft purchase from Airbus, highlighting a significant diversification move for the U.S.-based cargo specialist. The contract also includes options for a further 20 aircraft, potentially doubling the airline’s commitment to the A350F programme.

Deliveries are expected to begin in 2027 and continue through 2034, forming part of Atlas Air’s long-term fleet renewal and capacity expansion strategy. The aircraft design is intended to offer improved fuel efficiency, lower emissions, and enhanced payload capability compared with previous-generation freighters.

Timeline Adjusted Amid Supply Chain Pressures

Airbus previously delayed the A350F’s entry into service by around one year, with first deliveries now scheduled for the second half of 2027. This adjustment reflects the ongoing production challenges and supply chain constraints impacting the wider aerospace manufacturing sector.

Despite the delay, demand for new-technology cargo aircraft remains robust, driven by e-commerce growth, evolving logistics networks and increasing sustainability pressures across the aviation industry.

The introduction of advanced wide-body freighters such as the A350F is set to play a central role in shaping the next phase of global cargo aviation. This can be seen as cargo operators position themselves for long-term growth.
