Key Highlights of The Project
The Baltic Cargo Hub is expected to be in operation within 12 months. Establishing a standard for the region’s air cargo infrastructure. Giving Latvia the opportunity to keep expanding as a major global logistics hub.
The size of the facility will be nearly 7000 m², with 5000 m² dedicated to cargo handling and 2000 m² for office spaces. The new facility will include special features such as veterinary service areas, temperature-controlled rooms and advanced cargo handling technologies. Building Information Modelling (BIM), an advanced technology that provides effectiveness and accuracy throughout the development process. This technology is used in the construction of the Baltic Cargo Hub. The project team can reduce errors and streamline workflows by simulating and optimising every facet of the design and construction phases with the help of BIM. The project also has a BREEAM sustainability certification.
Modern semi-automated cargo handling systems, such as a mail sorter and Material Handling System (MHS), will improve productivity and streamline processes. Additionally, the facility will accommodate specific requirements by providing sections for processing live animals, hazardous materials, and valuable packages, as well as temperature-controlled areas for medications and perishables. UPB Nams, SIA is the contractor of the project.

An Important Asset for Latvia’s Economy
The import and export of valuable goods, mail and transit cargo are all made possible by air cargo. Air cargo is crucial to Latvia’s economy. However, despite making up only 1% of global commerce volume, air cargo accounts for 35% of trade value, demonstrating its significance to the economy. This project is a huge milestone in expanding RIX Riga Airport’s role in global trade.
Laila Odina, Chairperson of RIX Riga Airport, outlined the benefits of the project. “Our national airline airBaltic is already the largest aviation cargo and mail carrier at Riga Airport. We are confident that the new cargo handling centre will optimise and enhance cargo service processes, providing additional benefits to both the airline and its customers.
