Japan Airlines (JAL) recently strengthened its strategic partnership with Korean Air by investing in shares of Korean Air’s holding company, Hanjin KAL. The investment was made as part of Japan Airlines’ (JAL) plan to improve aviation operations and for both airlines to boost commercial relationships independently.
New strategic partnership
JAL was a government-owned airline company which became Japan’s national airline in 1953; now fully privatised, it operates commercial and cargo services internationally. Both the Korean and Japanese airlines have jointly flown since the 1960’s, formally announcing shared codeshare procedures in 2004. The investment does not signal a joint venture or an alliance change but is a collaboration between the two carriers.
The two carriers signed a memorandum on Sept. 3, 2026, aimed at expanding cooperation across several areas, including codeshare flights and mileage ties.

- Maintenance
- Lounges
- SAF
- Air mobility
- Innovation fund
- LCC partnership
- Co-branded card
- Personnel exchange training
- Cargo
JAL has stated,
“This strategic partnership will elevate the strong cooperative system that both companies have cultivated to the next level, creating new value and customer experiences in the global market, starting with Japan and South Korea.”
Korean Air’s integration
The memorandum comes as Korean Air is set to finalise its merger with Asiana Airlines in December 2026. The merger will absorb Asiana Airlines, consolidating Korean Air’s market position and growth strategy while resolving Asiana’s ongoing financial difficulties, according to aviation analysts.
JAL also commented on the Korean Air and Asiana Airlines merger,
“On December 17, 2026, KE will complete its integration of Asiana Airlines, significantly expanding its scale and reach as a leading global airline. With the launch of the integrated airline, not only the connection between JAL and KE but also the skies between Japan and South Korea will enter a new stage.”
Korean Air has also expanded its partnerships elsewhere, signing a separate strategic agreement with Thailand’s Thai Aviation Industries (TAI) to cooperate on military aircraft maintenance,
