The VN34 flight that took off from Munich Airport (MUC) to Hanoi’s Nội Bài International Airport (HAN) at 1:35 p.m. CEST on Aug. 16 was cancelled after the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner was made to turn around due to a major aircraft issue.

Vietnam Airlines Dreamliner issue

During the VN34 flight, the plane experienced a major aircraft issue shortly after departing for its journey when the Dreamliner’s systems alerted the pilots of tyre pressure problems as well as a possible tailstrike hit. The plane was swiftly flown back to MUC at 1:57 p.m. CEST after the crew realised the complications.

Emergency protocols to keep passengers safe were enacted, and air traffic control was alerted, allowing pilots to land safely. This prompted a thorough investigation into the incident and a close inspection of the aircraft.

The Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner has been quarantined and is to be held for a detailed examination. While still awaiting the verdict, Vietnam Airlines arranged alternative travel for affected passengers and secured travel arrangements for the afternoon on Aug. 16.

Pictures of the Dreamliner’s tail smoking have been circulating, highlighting the severity of the situation. Reportedly, the aircraft overran the runway, causing a late takeoff, and also struggled to land when it returned to MUC. The aircraft had a delayed rotation during the lift-off, which led to a plume of dust and debris.

Safe landing

The Dreamliner stayed in the air, circling to burn fuel and reduce weight to ensure a safe landing for the 271 passengers and 16 crew members.

German authorities are leading the case, with help from the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV), as they probe what happened. A statement from CAAV was issued, stating:

“The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam is currently liaising with the German investigation authority to coordinate efforts and request the prompt provision of information regarding the incident and the investigation process.”

According to MUC officials, after the plane landed, it couldn’t be moved manually and remained stranded on the north runway, obstructing aircraft and disrupting airport operations.

Operations have resumed at MUC without disruptions, according to the website’s arrivals and departures information.
