A United Airlines flight bound for Minneapolis from Chicago was diverted to Madison, Wisconsin, after a passenger made repeated attempts to breach the aircraft’s cockpit. The individual in question was detained by local authorities after the plane landed at Dane County Regional Airport, and the FBI is now investigating the incident.
A concerning mid-air incident
The trouble with the passenger in question had begun before the plane had even taken off, according to MSN. Reportedly, the man had stood up while the aircraft was taxiing at the airport in Chicago, and was asked numerous times by airline staff to sit down. Crew members asked passengers if anybody on the flight could interpret as the man spoke Russian with very limited English.
Eventually, the plane was able to take off after he complied with staff and sat back down. However, it would not be long before the situation escalated into something far more serious. The flight had departed Chicago and was embarking on its scheduled flight to Minneapolis when security concerns were raised about the same passenger’s behaviour.
According to CNN, air traffic control audio from the flight captured crew members describing an unruly passenger who had made multiple attempts to breach the aircraft’s cockpit before being restrained by law enforcement officers on board. The incident forced the plane to make an emergency diversion to Dane County Regional Airport in Madison, Wisconsin.
United Airlines later provided a statement to Simple Flying, confirming the sequence of events:
“United flight 2005 from Chicago to Minneapolis landed safely in Madison, Wisconsin to address a security concern with an unruly passenger. The flight continued to Minneapolis later on Friday.”
What happened after the diversion?
After the plane landed in Wisconsin, the passenger was detained by local authorities. This included members of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) who had been informed of the incident due to its serious nature.
In a statement to CNN, FBI spokesperson Caroline Clancy said:
“A subject was detained by the Dane County Sheriff’s Office and afterwards passengers resumed their flight.”
After the passenger was detained, the flight was subsequently cleared to continue on its original journey and later landed safely in Minneapolis.
It has not yet been confirmed by authorities exactly what occurred on the flight, and the individual who was arrested has not been publicly identified. Officials are also yet to report whether charges have been filed in relation to this incident. However, the FBI has confirmed that it is now investigating the matter.
