New Route

The new direct route from Cardiff Airport to Toronto Pearson International Airport was announced on Nov. 18, 2025 and officially launched over May 22-23, 2026. This route will be operated by WestJet, Canada’s second-largest airline headquartered in Calgary, Alberta. This seasonal service also provides Wales with its first direct air connection to Canada in nearly two decades.

The route operates four times per week using a Boeing 737-8 MAX aircraft:
  • From Cardiff to Toronto: Departs at 11.35 a.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, arriving in Toronto at 2.45 p.m. (approximately 8 hours 10 minutes).
  • From Toronto to Cardiff: Departs at 10.10 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, arriving in Cardiff the next morning at 10.15 a.m. (approximately 7 hours 5 minutes).

Opportunities and Benefits

Toronto serves as a primary hub for onward travel across North America. Passengers can seamlessly book connecting flights through WestJet and its partners to Canadian cities such as Vancouver, Calgary, and Montreal and U.S. destinations like New York City and Florida. This direct flight eliminates stressful layovers in Amsterdam, Paris, or Dublin and YYZ opens seamless onward connections to cities like Vancouver, Calgary, New York, and Las Vegas.

Adam Price MS, cabinet minister for enterprise, connectivity and energy, stated:

“Direct transatlantic connectivity like this is exactly what Welsh businesses need to reach new markets, attract investment and grow and it reinforces our ambition to make Wales one of the best-connected economies in the UK.”

The flight makes Wales directly accessible to Canadian tourists, which will boost local hospitality and will create new opportunities for tourism, trade, investment and cultural exchange. Direct transit also strengthens trade, academic partnerships, and corporate links between Wales and Ontario.

Adding this new route will directly combat the post-pandemic passenger decline by adding thousands of high-yield international travellers to the airport’s annual traffic. It will also give Cardiff a unique selling point over nearby rival Bristol Airport (BRS), which lacks direct transatlantic flights.
