Celebrations were held at Edinburgh Airport (EDI) as Finnair marked a decade of direct service between Scotland’s capital and Helsinki. The service was initially launched on April 18, 2016, operating three times per week. Now the airline operates up to seven direct flights between the two cities weekly.

From Seasonal to Year-Round Service

Between 2006 and 2007, Finnair operated the route on a seasonal basis before relaunching the service in 2016. Today, the route is operated year-round.

Anssi Partanen, European Market Director at Finnair, said:

“We are honoured to have worked closely with the Edinburgh Airport team for ten years, connecting passengers between our two capital cities. Over this time, we have been proud to grow the route from a seasonal service to a year-round operation, reflecting its importance to both business and leisure travellers. The connection between Nordic and Scottish culture also makes this route particularly special.”
The chief commercial officer of Edinburgh Airport, Stephanie Wear, echoed these sentiments, saying:
“It’s fantastic to be celebrating a decade of working with Finnair – a partnership that has gone from strength to strength over that time. The connectivity Finnair provides, not only between Edinburgh and Helsinki but to destinations across the globe, has been central to the route’s success, and its appeal to both business and leisure travellers ensures it continues to generate strong and lasting demand. From everyone at Edinburgh Airport, we’re delighted to toast our ongoing relationship with Finnair – kippis!”
To mark the occasion, Finnair customers travelling from Edinburgh Airport enjoyed light festivities at the departure gate.

The World’s Happiest Country

The United Nations World Happiness Report named Finland the World’s Happiest Country for the ninth year running this year.

Its capital, Helsinki, is famed for its light-coloured buildings, which have earned it the nickname of the “White City of the North”. Nestled on over 100 km of shoreline, it is also home to over 300 islands. For passengers looking to travel a little further afield, Helsinki Airport also offers transfers across the Nordic and Baltic states, as well as to Asian destinations.
