Africa’s largest B787 operator, Ethiopian Airlines is set to buy six Dreamliners. The deliveries are expected to take place in 2028, bringing the carrier’s aircraft order to 26.

Current Fleet and Expansion

Currently, Ethiopian Airlines already is the largest Boeing 787 Dreamliner operator within the African continent. The carrier’s fleet has around 150 aircraft, with a mix between Airbus and Boeing. Besides carrying the greatest number of B787, 20, the airline also is Africa’s largest carrier.

Concerning cargo capacity, the airline also carries a great number of aircraft, with them being either B777-200LR and B737-800F. Given the mix between medium and long-haul aircraft, the airline is capable of carrying flights to several major destinations, such as Dubai International Airport (DXB) and London Heathrow (LHR).

The recently order B787s are expected to be delivered some time in 2028; simultaneously with the Dreamliners ordered prior to the new one. The 26 aircraft are expected to be delivered by 2028. In addition, the fleet expansion is due to the carrier’s strategy to increase fuel efficiency and modernise its fleet.

Why Does the Expansion Matter?

There are several components that explain why the fleet expansion is important. The airline expects to launch new international routes, as well as increase the services of already existing ones. For instance, the carrier has expressed interest in starting flights to Australia, which it couldn’t previously, due to the shortage of aircraft.

Moreover, by enlarging the number of B787, the carrier seeks developing a stronger hub, at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport (ADD). By having a bigger fleet, the number of connections and passenger frequency at the hub will significantly grow, leading to a more attractive hub.

What is your view on the airline’s new additions to the fleet? Is it a good strategy? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
